In Wiesbaden, Germany, a demolition project involving several residential buildings in the Army’s Crestview neighborhood is underway, with the presence of asbestos mitigation measures evident in the construction waste bags lining the perimeter of the area. Asbestos was once commonly used in construction due to its durability and heat-resistant properties, but it has been banned in building projects in the United States and Europe due to the health risks associated with inhaling its fibers. Garrison spokeswoman Audra Calloway stated that the construction waste bags seen at the site are the final layer of containment used for transporting any material found to the appropriate disposal site, ensuring safety measures are followed. The garrison plans to convert the demolished sites into parking lots for neighborhood residents to address issues of traffic and congestion that have arisen since the conversion of family housing units into living spaces for single soldiers in Crestview.
Additionally, the possibility of creating green spaces and recreation areas in place of the demolished buildings is being considered by garrison commander Col. David Mayfield. The project, which began in late fall with an estimated cost of $2 million, aims to demolish seven buildings in the Crestview neighborhood, with one building already demolished and completion expected by September. Despite concerns about asbestos inhalation, the risk is minimal unless the material is disturbed and becomes airborne during activities like construction or renovation. The substance was extensively used in Germany until a ban in 1993, with budget constraints leading to the cancellation of demolitions for two other buildings in Crestview and the Aukamm neighborhood.
