Dr. Robert Schloesser, the former director of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation at the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden, is recognized for his dedication to taking care of Soldiers and their Families. His 27-year career in the Army, including two tours in Vietnam, has been marked by his commitment to enhancing the quality of life for service members serving overseas. Schloesser played a key role in guiding FMWR support services and was instrumental in the garrison winning the Army Communities of Excellence Award.
Throughout his career, Schloesser has been praised as a change agent, representing the best qualities of both an Army officer and civil servant. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Schloesser’s lifelong commitment to military service began in his youth, inspired by his father’s military career. Although unable to attend West Point due to poor eyesight, he became an officer through ROTC and served in various leadership roles, including commanding positions in Vietnam. Retiring from the military in 1984, Schloesser continued his service as an Army civilian, contributing to peacekeeping missions in the Balkans and earning a doctorate in organizational leadership at the age of 69.
Schloesser’s dedication to service extends beyond his military career, including involvement in the Boy Scouts and organizing youth programs. Together with his wife Joyce, who has also been involved in supporting Soldiers and Families, Schloesser now enjoys retirement in Augusta, Georgia. Reflecting on his time in Germany, Schloesser acknowledges the impact of his work and the relationships built during his years of service.
